On the left is a flex plate for a 360 with the TH400. On the right is a flex plate for a 401 with the TH400. No weight on the 360 (except for the little round riveted tubes) and a 1' x 2 1/4" weight on the 401flex plate.

just wondering if you guys can help out before I go to far with this, pulled out my 343 last night, I'm putting in a recond 4v 290, the flexplate I have with the 290 has 6 holes and is smaller than the old 343 one which has 4 holes ,luckily I got the convertor with the 290 and it seems to go into the 343 trans ok ,looks like both transmissions I have are M11's, question, are the 290 converters supposed to be smaller by a few centimetres in diameter?if all seems right I'll keep on moving with the transplant, cheers

Pictures saved off the web, unable to give credit as to who's they are....
Difference in size of balance weight is visible in the pics,
not a huge difference, but different.

Just to go a little further with this. These plates are for '74 to '79 TH400. (the earlier one used with a nailhead trans and adapter ring is different) The "mustache" cut out of the plates IS the balance weight! On the 6 cyl it's cut out all the way. The 401 plate was rebalanced from a 360 plate. The actual factory 401 plate has a very skinny mustache without the "undernose" divot. 304 flexplate has a bigger mustache (smaller weight offset) 304 flexplate to TH400 (almost brand new) Here's the TH400 to 327 flexplate on the motor and the adapter ring |

How do I figure out which hole is the offset hole on the crankshaft? Does the ring/washer go between the flywheel and crank or flywheel and trans

The flex plate will only line up one way with the holes in the end of the crank. You have to put it on the crank and keep spinning it around until all the bolt holes line up. The flex plate goes on the crank shaft first, ring/washer goes on the flex plate, the bolts go through the ring/washer then through the flex plate.
