Early July 2019 attended a local "cruise in" with Aussie AMX#24.
Arrived late and as we pulled up noticed a bloke looking at the AMX. Came straight over as we got out, said he had not seen an AMX since 1983. Turns out in 1983 ( 36 years ago ) he was working on the road from Winton to Boulia in Western Qld. At that time there was a white AMX crashed on the South side of the road near a creek a few mile Boulia side of the Middleton Hotel. He said definately an AMX, you can't mistake the black circle on the rear quarter. He was familiar with AMC cars as he lived near an Annand & Thompson dealership (AMI Rambler dealership ) in Brisbane when he was young. Crash site is about 920km from our place. Co-pilot and I went out there and looked couple of days ago. Everything checked out. There is a creek about the right distance West of the pub. Channels closer, but he said creek. Qld developmental roads were being built in 70's and 80's. Checked out Qld globe ( Govt aerial photo's ) They did runs out that way in 1974 and 2009. Car could have crashed and been moved between those dates. It's open country and I reckon a two door V8 would be noticed for sure and picked up. Well used road across to NT or down to Birdsville from Boulia. Alot of grass out there this year though after good rain earlier. Will go back and look again in a drought year. Wonder if this AMX was Aussie AMX#21. Pic is crash site area. 24-Sept-2019. Edit,- Nov 2021. Definitely not Aussie AMX#21. Good news is that #21 turned up in South Australia recently. Some reference pics of Aussie AMX#24 which is fairly original.
I added the mudflaps to protect the still original acrylic paintwork. Note the " AMI Kew Dealership " sticker. Has survived on outside of rear window. " Rambler " floormats came from USA. Not AMI issue. The five end of assembly line inspection stickers still on the windscreen after 50 years blow me away everytime I see them. |

Years ago, I shipped an excellent original yellow paint 69 AMX hood to a lad in OZ who said the original hood was lost between moves. I've always wondered which number RHD AMX it was for?

Friend of ours has been looking for an AMX for a long time. Had given up on finding one of the 24 Aussie assembled RHD ones. Did a couple of trips to USA searching LHD.
Well, at last she had a win. Got Aussie AMX#16 registered on road today and called in to see us. Pity I been dragging the chain on #14. Hope we can do this picture again sometime with #14 in original Safety Wattle Yellow and on the road as well. |
