Is it possible to use a set of .040 343 pistons (4cc) with a 360 crank (.16 longer stroke) in a 343 with rectangle port heads? Would the valves hit? More compression than 360 pistons?

Thanks

Hey:

what are you getting out of that mix?

343 is a short stroke, high compression engine, they stroked it out to offset the losses from emissions/compression lowering to a 360. Better to bore that one to the max for max power. As far as I can see, the only Brand X V-8 that comes close to the bore/stroke ratio is the Chrysler 340, these 343's are untapped gold!

I would think the piston height in the bore would determine whether or not you hit valves, get 11:1 hot engine or wound up with a 7.5 : 1 dog.

A 343 or a 360 stroker engine makes a really nice piece to be recond with.

That stroker 390 has a real sweet idle!
I'm just curious if the lesser amount of dish (4cc vs 27cc) and the .020 higher in the hole piston makes this set up not work. In other words, that if you stroke a 343 with a 304 or 360 crank, you must use dish 27cc or custom pistons. Is this the case?

The 343/360 strokers that I build use the 360 crank off-set ground.  I use aftermarket connecting rods and yes, custom pistons.  The connecting rods are a shelf item and it is not a big deal to get pistons made.

Thanks SC397. I was just curious. I guess that the simple way to do it is to just go with the dish 360 pistons. Less machine work and money. I was wondering because of the compression ratio possibility. I understand that it is possible to drop below 9:1 with this configuration? Depending on milling and regrinds? I have your initial explanation with the slight change in rod length due to reconditioning resulting in 0.00 deck height, and end up with 9:1. Can it go less? What would I need to watch out for when getting the machine work?

Thanks in advance.

Years ago I built a engine in a 343 block with a stock 360 crank and rods.  I used +.060" dished 360 pistons and I may have had .020" or .030" machined off of the tops.  I will confirm.  With the 1970 heads, the resulting compression was about 8.6:1 if my menory serves me. The resulting cubic inch was 370.  That engine ran really well with a Crower cam, Torker, 650 Holley.  In my '68 AMX with a T10, 3.54:1 and stock Free Flow manifolds and street tires it ran 13.7.
I am currently building the same block and crank combo but I am using custom pistons at 4.125" bore.

Really? Boy, that sounds like it'll be a great engine...Big smile

Thanks for the replies. Thats pretty good with the dogleg heads. The lower compression still moved the car pretty well. I did the math with the 4cc pistons and it ends up 12:1   I don't think any 343 pistons can take that kind of punishment without breaking rings and or ring landings....   I'm understanding that I need to have the dish pistons in the 343 block, all mounted up to verify that they will come up flush with the extra length stroke. If they are short, then I can mill the block to get as close to 0.0 deck clearence and maintain 10:1 CR.    Can you pls corre ct me if I'm wrong pls.
