A Playmate AMX update. The car has been finished for a year now and has been to lot's of shows, including the AMO show at Cleveland last year.
Great past weekend for the car. Started off by taking the car to Phoenix for the annual Cactus Cruisers AMC Car Show where the car won 2nd place to Cameron's beautifully restored BBO 69 AMX. As soon as the show was over I picked up and headed back across the border to the San Diego area for the annual The La Jolla Concours d’Elegance show which the Playmate AMX was pre-entered into. I arrived in the area around midnight, slept in my truck until a slow but increasing tapping of rain on my roof woke me up around 3:30am. I was just around the corner from Tom Dulaney's house who agreed to help me out this day to move my car onto the show field while I moved my trailer after unloading. After waking him up at 430 we went to the local Denny's to discuss what to do with the apparent washout of the show. I was so close to just taking off for home and writing off the day. Then like clock work about the time we finished our breakfast the rained stopped. Long story short we decided to drive towards the La Jolla area and make a final final decision there after looking at the weather with our own eyeballs. Well when we arrived the rain had been stopped for a while, the ground was dry, the skies showed signs of getting better so it was decided to go for it, let's pull the pink car out. So there the car sat at the end of a row of muscle cars gathering a lot of attention, especially from the ladies! The judges came and my car was the last to be inspected. Around noon one of the judges came back and handed me a card that said, "Be near my car around 1:30." At 1:30 four show people showed up with a thick black rope, using it like a barricade of sorts to escort the Playmate AMX through the crowd up to the stage for the award presentations. It had won 1st in its class. When they called my name I inched the nose forward onto the black carpeted stage and stopped in the middle while the Emcee announced the award. The Emcee said, who better to talk about the car than Jeff Teague, son of Dick Teague, designer of the AMX. There Jeff was, on stage talking about the AMX for 5 minutes or so. Then when it came time to hand over the hardware Jeff announced his daughter Rachael would have the honors. It was just a wild day to go from thinking the whole day was rained out and I'm heading home, to winning 1st place in class at the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance. Wow, wow. The Playmate AMX driving across the stage to accept the 1st place trophy in the Muscle car class. Jeff on hand to talk about the car, daughter Rachael to present hardware. Photo by Rich Truesdell. The trophy sitting on the hood back in the trailer. Glamor shot of the day. Photo by Tom Dulaney.

Well I tried to give the first crack at photographing the car to Jeff Koch of Hemmings. He apologized to say he would not be able to shoot the car, and didn't recommend anyone either. Then I had an Australian magazine inquire about a story on the car. I called Rich Truesdell, a long time friend and car magazine editor for advice. He has now taken over the project of promoting the car towards magazines. He has many contacts with editors and car shows. The first thing he did was accomodate the Australian magazine with photos that we took yesterday. He has also secured layouts in two different magazines, with interest in more. I am not going to mention names so as not to jinx the whole thing, but Rich told me we couldn't do any better and so far the results have exceeded his expectations. In the 5 hour photo shoot yesterday we drove all over the area doing car to car shots. We tried to recreate the May 68 Playboy picture with the Playmate half sitting on the front right fender. For the model we used Mark Fletcher's daughter, Clelsea, who did a bang up professional job, responding to every demand of the photographer to set her pose. Rich took nearly 1000 pictures and went through several batteries. Here's the one photograph he has released to promote magazine requests.. |

Had this pic on my computer, one of the sessions I set up with Todd Howard for the centerfold of Car Craft. Mark, I should have mentioned that I sent pictures and wrote to each of these magazines with facts about the AMX in general and the story of my AMX. I shot the picture that appeared on the cover of Cars and Parts as well as all of the photos of my AMX in that issue and the pictures they used for years after in 2 or 3 other issues. I sent pictures of my AMX 1st in a parking lot, then the editor suggested I shoot better pics in an interesting location, so being on the West Coast I drove my AMX over to north of Santa Cruz as the sun was rising to catch the glint of the sun in the Scarab Gold paint and shot pictures of my AMX with the ocean in the background. I shot Kodachrome color slides and black and white film per their request. (If you read the issue with my AMX on the cover, you will see that they do not mention who shot the pictures. I have a letter from the editor stating that most readers do not handle a camera as well as I did and they don't want of ton of amateur photos coming in wanting to be published. The funny part is, I did not know much about photography, but I knew enough to put the camera on a tripod with a remote trigger and to take a ton of pictures while changing the exposure settings on the camera, knowing that some of the settings would come out great by chance). The other magazines sent photographers out to shoot my AMX and I was able to set up other photo shoots for some of my friends with AMX's (including the Breedlove AMX), and some friends with custom ISCA show cars while they were there. The obvious place to have your AMX photo shoot would of course been at the Mansion, with a bunny or two would be nice as well. Heck, Playboy might even want to run a small feature of your AMX as well. Pick some magazines and send out some pictures. You will be making someones job easier by giving them the article they need without them doing much work. |

And don't send photos for the Readers Rides page, you'll never get a feature after that.
