I would be curious to know the outcome of this - because I did the same swap and there are issues with it. That 2" pinion offset kills your U joint angles and in a Javelin where you need the width, it doesn't work right. The other issue is the driveshaft will hit the rear of the tunnel right near a brake line clip. I'm swapping mine out to a 9" this winter. If you can shorten or lengthen it by swapping tubes and/or axles to center the pinion, it will work great and it's cheap. I've been going to post this in the Frankenrambler section but haven't got around to it.

Okay guys I finally hit my 30 posts! Here are the pics of the axle mocked up. It'll get cleaned up when I get back to it after the engine and trans are sitting in it. I'll be making everything pretty, lowering it 1.5"-2" with blocks, getting longer U bolts, and welding up the stock U bolt plate to the explorer one for the shock mounts. I was just happy to see how far the wheels would sit out..

You have to have 30 posts to gain access to forum server space. If you can host the pic's somewhere else on the net (like Photobucket or your own personal website) you can post them now. You don't actually upload pic's to a post, you use the IMG tags to point to the picture location.

Ahh gotcha. Well I'm close so as soon as I get to 30 I'll upload pics of the wheel/pinion offsets and stance!

IIRC you need 30 post before you can upload pictuers. Blame it on spamers.

Here's a little update:

After many trips to the junkyard and fastner store, I got the rear axle mocked up. I'm pretty happy with the alignment of the pinion in the grand scheme of things. I cannot upload pictures though :/ any help on that? The axle width is good and the wheel offset is just about perfect.

Please help on the photo upload!! I click on add a picture and it says server error.

Maybe I could swap the tubes side to side? The pumpkin itself offsets the pinion to the side that is already shorter, so that would put it closer to the center and help counter the offset. If that makes any sense..?

The axles are EXACTLY 3" different in length... this is the same thing I did with the 8.8 in my Rogue, except I had 3" taken out of the long tube, just above the where the spring-perch is welded on... the 3" inches taken out moves the pinion to within 1 1/4" of being centered .

So when the axle tubes are of equal length, the pinion offset sits at 1.25" (due to the way the pumpkin is set up). If I swapped my sides, I would still have that 3" difference in tube lengths, but could subtract 1.25" off of one because the pumpkin's bias would help offset it. That would put approx 2.75" off center without having to actually cut tubes. I really want to stay away from going any narrower.

Maybe I could replace the shorter axle tube/axle with another long one to put it closer to stock width? Anybody want to trade? Big smile

I have the ford explorer 8.8 (disk, 4.10 gear, and richmond mini spool) in my spirit and so far haven't had any issues with vibration or hitting the tunnel or floor plans. I welded the spring perches at the same angle as the stock ford location. I have new leaf springs and shocks so there is no sag in the back either.
