It will fit but you will have to use everything from the motor back,Flywheel, bellhousing and transmission and drive shaft, the 343 is a cast iron transmission as where the 290 is a aluimin transmission.

They also use different flexplates and torque converters. The converter in the cast iron transmissions have 4-studs and use castle nuts, the converter in the aluminum transmissions use 6 bolts.

You definitely need a 343 flexplate. The flexplate is made to balance the engine. The 290 flexplate may work okay at idle and low speeds, but will most likely cause engine vibration at higher speeds. This can lead to main bearing failure.

As long as you take it easy on the car (just normal driving, few wheel burns and such) the M-40 transmission should be okay. Factory 290/4V cars came with the cast iron trans because the factory expected them to get rough treatment.

Yes it does, the 290 2bbl uses 4 bolts as well as the 343 to hook the convertor to the flexplate. Keep the original flexplate on the 343 as was mentioned to stay in balance, and then bolt the trans with its convertor to the engine and you will be hooked up and good to go. Hope that helps, SH
