I have a 1968 AMX with a 290 and the small BW Tranny, I want to swap it for a 727. Any direction/info on what I need to do this, would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, |

There is a conversion kit you can bolt up to the 290 that should work OK. Lats time I bought one, I paid around $190 delivered from the AMC vendor in FL.

Do a search here on the forum on 727 swap. You will find all the info you need. I put a 727 in my 70. Not too hard. You need an adapter/or machine the crank, modify a trans mount, modify driveshaft, adapt the linkage, use the 727 kick down linkage or Lokar, adapted speedo cable (available on ebay and AMC vendors). Remember to adjust the kickdown/throttle linkage. Failure to do so properly can wipe out your trans.

Thanks, for the info....I purchased the adapter and the related hardware that I need to do the swap, however I am still confused. The nose of the torque converter does not fit into the hub of the adapter.....it is a bit too big....is this a common problem? Should I have the adapter machined or should I try to trim/grind down the converter so it does fit?

If anything have the adapter machined. First make sure you have the right torque converter. I assume you're using an AMC converter for the Shift Command (AMC Torque Flite) transmission and not a Chrysler converter? I don't think there's a difference in the converters, but might be.
What transmission are you using -- 727, 904, or 998? The adapter is made assuming a 727, but the 727 should have the larger pilot "nose" on the converter, I'd think. |

My tranny is an AMC 727. It came out of a 1973 Javelin. I had it rebuilt and installed a shift kit as well. The adapter I got off Flea Bay ($15.00) quite a while ago. 2 things bother me about it, first, as I mentioned, the pilot on the converter won't fit into the hub of the adapter plate because it is too big (diameter), and secondly it is made of aluminum. I'm beginning to think I have bought a cheap imititation? Anyway, I have since contacted our friends at American Performance Products in Florida and discussed my problem with them. He feels, as I now do, that the adapter is not correct. So I ordered the entire Adapter Kit ($198.00) from them. Hopefully this will solve my problem.
