A friend is swapping to discs on his 70 Javelin with drum brakes. He has a complete used setup from a 77 Hornet. Can he just change the hubs or does he have to undo the ball joints to change the entire spindle? He is already changing the master cylinder. Thanks.

The spindle bolts to the knuckle with four bolts, no need to take ball joints apart.

ok, thanks. I've never swapped from drum to disc only old discs to later discs.

You need to swap the entire spindle and all out. Keep all the disc components together. You've got the worst setup to use. The 77-78 Hornet/Gremlin brakes use a 2.6" piston caliper (same as used 79-81) but use a thin big bearing rotor. The rotors are hard to come by -- local parts stores probably can't get them, you'll likely have to go to an AMC vendor and expect to pay OVER $100 each.  A Scarebird setup will run $400-500 with all new late model parts plus the Scarebird kit (www.scarebird.com, the Rebel/Javelin kit fits all AMCs). If you have to buy new rotors and the other conversion parts you'll have about that much in a factory parts swap.

If the rotors are good now and you already have the part use them, you just may want to switch to Scarebird (or something else like Aerospace Components or Willwood, but those cost more) if/when the rotors need replacing.
