So far this engine has only used the WIx #51258 filter, and it clears the frame by about an inch.
I have 2 other filters on the shelf, I found them at my grandfathers place and they date from the mid 1970's.   One is a Fram PH-11, but it's not one of the cardboard abominations that Fram makes now, it actually appears to be a decent filter. The other is an STP-7, again from the mid 1970's, and this sucker is the best made filter I have ever seen. It is 6 inches tall, and weighs a ton.

I don't know if they will fit. I guess I'll find out at my next oil change.  I can't wait to see how well that STP works!  Tongue

From what I can find on the 'net, the ACDelco PF24 is 4.25 inches tall. shorter than the Napa (WIx) filter I have used.

So far, on every Wix 1258 I have bought, I can blow air into them and the air leaks right past the drain back valve.   The 1085 on the 4.0L doesn't do this and seals every time.

When I took the two filters apart, it turns out the spacer used on the 1258 between the base plate and the cartridge is too small, so the drainback valve squishes out and doesn't seal. This is also the seal between the filter body and the cartdidge itself, so dirty oil can by-pass through the gap. Angry   The 1085 doesn't use the spacer, and instead has the relief valve there, which is the correct size and seals correctly.

Other filters I have taken apart include Fram, and Purolator.    The frams are not even worth a second glance. The Purolators suffer from the simmilar problem as the Wix (Napa Gold).

So I pretty much gave up on finding a filter than actually seals internally.  I might as well try the ACDelco PF24, for lack of anything more promising out there.

Seriously, grab a Napa Gold 1258 or Wix 51258, same things, and look at the base where it screws onto the engine.  Notice how the drain-back valve is crooked near the center where it is supposed to seal.   Blow ait into the center hole of the filter. Leaks air out, doesn't it. Every single one I have bought has. Now cut the filter open just above the rolled edge. You will find a spring in the back pushes the filter cartridge against a metal spacer, and that metal spacer seals to the face of the filter using the anti-drainback valve. Now try to put the filter back together. The anti-drainback valve squishes out every time.

As I said, the Purolator does a simmilar thing about half the time.

If you have the extra $3.00 or so, the K&N filter works great.  It has a very heavy case that can take a hit or two off road.  Napa has to order it though.

The Amsoil filter is probably the best one. As for the oil quantity, keep in mind that FSJ uses a different pan from AMC car (I had to swap mine when I put the 304 in my '73 J4000)

If I can remember my days in the dealership in the 70's all Jeeps took 6 quarts and cars took 5.  The oil pan on a jeep was deeper.  Does that mean you should put 7 quarts in a Jeep?

Has anyone used the K&N filter.  I looked at their web site and the filter does have a anti drain back valve.

Does the extra quart of oil apply to the 327 V8 as well? it takes 5 exactly to hit full.

FSJ's use a different oil pan but they still hold close to the same volume.  The first picture I posted up was from a FSJ.  Here is what the rest look like.
The top blue one is for all the passenger cars with the drain plug in the rear.  The middle one is from the big Jeep Wagoneer, Cherokee and Truck.  It has the drain plug on the side.  As a foot note, the oil pump housing was changed for the big Jeep to clear the differential. (A AMC Engineer told me this fact) They changed the Jeep oil pan by adding the extra dent  when they put the V8 in the CJ5 as shown in the bottom pan.  I think that the after market ones including the Milodon has the extra dent.

The blue pan is what my Jeep has exactly.
