This is an easy one! What point gap would you suggest with a stock Delco distributor? I have a dwell meter but I am not trusting it. To get 30 degrees of dwell it wants about .025 gap. That sounds very large to me and since the tester is old (surprise) and used I am not sure of it's accuracy.

Just curious.

Thanks,

Chris

Point gap should be .019 for new, .017 for used, with rubbing block on point of distributor lobe.

Pretty much like I figured. I have been setting points for almost 20 years and .025 seems wrong, whatever my dwell meter says. Time for a new dwell meter!

Thanks!

Matchbook cover, I go about .017-.018 personally.
Gap will close a bit with wear, that means dwell will increase and timing slow just a bit.

That might be my problem too, was going off the dwell meter, but that's what the factory said to trust

Dwell is just a mesurement of how many degrees of distributor rotation the points are closed.  Dwell is just a more accurate way of mesuring point gap.   Small gap=large dwell reading, large gap=small dwell reading.

The dwell on a V8 should be 30 degrees and equates to a .016 inch gap, but if your distributor cam is worn, a .016 inch point gap will not equal the correct dwell, so setting the dwell to specification makes up for worn distributor parts to a certain extent.

The reason for a specified point gap is so the points open at the correct time.  Dwell is the mesurement of how long they are open, so as long as your dwell is in specification, point gap is pretty much meaningless.
