I loved that my 440 had no lock buttons, and just found it really cool that you pushed the door handle down to lock. Aside from using the key, doesn't the door lock if you push the door handle down to engage the lock, then close the door with the button on the outside handle depressed?
This is how I thought it was, doesn't work though. When the inside handle is lowered you can hear something at the latch, so i'm assuming that a rod is attached properly. You kinda wonder if it is possible to lock door from outside using key, cause the twisting of the key would have to lower inside handle.. not much force turning a key! Come to think of it a coat hanger would work real good to unlock the door with this type of lock. Edited by Vistamc - Mar/09/2011 at 8:36pm |

When you push down the inside handle , you can t push on the outside door button . It s locked this way .
But when the car close , it release inside and goes back to unlocked . My car is in the next room , I just tried now :) It s a 66 Ambo , but I suppose they work all the same way . |

if you take the door panel off and oil everything well it will lock by pushing the inside handle down and then shutting the door with the button depressed, mine does anyway on both driver and passenger sides. My 66 Ambassador wouldn't lock at all, it wouldn't even click when I pushed the inside handle down, until I took the door panel off and soaked the entire set up with spray oil. It now locks with the key, by pushing the inside handle down with the door closed, and by pushing the inside handle down and closing the door with the button depressed. I love my weird little car.

Also, be sure your doors close twice each. When you close the door lightly, it will catch but be partially open, close it harder it CATCHES! If your door doesn't close partially, you will need to adjust your doors so they do close both ways or your locking mechanism won't work...such as my American convertible.
