Hey folks,
I've got another crossmember question. It goes out to any of you who have seen both the I6 and V8 versions. I just noticed that the diagram illustration for both in the 'Haynes' repair manual is identical except for the number and position of holes where the rubber mounts sit. It appears that the member and the welded on flanges on both sides look to be the same size and angle. If this is the case, one would need only the rubber mounts and engine brackets and fabricate an adapter plate. It would be more cost effective than the Bulltear option (cost+shipping+duties and or brokerage fees). So has anyone ever seen both (preferrably side by side) and know if they are indeed very similar? Cheers. D

Which vehicle are you talking about?
If you are talking about the small body cars (American,Gremlin,Hornet, Concord, Spirit) The cross members are not the same between the 6 cylinder and the V8's. The mounts are different. You can put the original V8 cross member in, get the Bulltear kit or, make your own brackets if you want to install a V8 where a 6cyl used to be. |

Sorry about that. It's for a small body... a '73 Hornet. I know about the Bulltear option however I just noticed that both illustrations in the manual show exactly the same looking crossmember except for the number and positioning of holes. So that's why I was questioning it. I had yet to pull the 232 and the car is in storage so I haven't had a chance to see what a I6 CM looks like (but I just see one on ebay). It's different than the V8 CMs I've seen thus far so I guess they are a bit different. The illustration doesn't show this. I think I can fab one from the 6 though. Thanks.

Probably not. I know they are pretty expensive and and that's why people say go the Bulltear route. I never paid much for the car or the motor even though the car looks and runs really well. I can probably make up something or get the Bulltear adapter if need be. I'm located in the most easterly part of North America so shipping is usually crippling and that's why I was trying to see if I could do up something myself. Thanks for your reply and offer. If I change my mind I'll be sure to drop you a line. Cheers.
