The 4 bolt balancer will need to be match balanced to the correct 390 balancer. They are not the same.
The deeper water pump pulley is for the longer shaft water pump.

Here's a pic of the pulleys:
The numbers on the pulleys are 3224455 on the taller one and 3216630 on the other. Went into the garage to check the dampers, looks like I'm wrong on that one. The other damper I was looking at was an aftermarket one. Now I can't remember which combo of damper and pulley I'm using. I think the shorter one came off a '73 401. |

The challenge to 40 year old cars is that you have no idea what someone has done before you got the car or engine. We have a milk crate full of pulleys yet each engine I have done from the stash rather than one that comes directly out of a car and all hooked up requires the engine to be fully assembled and the water pump to be attahced before being able to ensure that the pulleys all line up so each time I do a new engine it is a PITA to get everything lined up.

So back to the original question. If you have a later 401 that uses a 4 bolt balancer can the balancer off of a 71 model 401 that is a 3 bolt be used on the later 401 without rebalancing?

Unaware if the early 3 bolt and late 4 bolt 401 Dampeners interchange, have the same balance.
Is one of both types on-hand to sit side by side for a visual comparison ? Picture ?
If 1972 was still 3 bolt dampener and was 1st year for Torque Command trans,
then it would be only year with 3 bolt and TC Flexplate with 401 balance where
a 1971 (edit, remove "and '72") 401 3 bolt would have been with a BW Flexplate with 401 balance.
Lack having the 1973-78 Parts Manual to lookup the 4 bolt dampener and pulley part numbers.
If 1972 401 with TC used the same 3 bolt dampener as the 1971 401 with BW,
that would suggest the 3 bolt and 4 bolt 401 dampeners are interchangeable ?
The 1972 Parts Manual shows 71 & 72 401's both use the same dampener
which I guess suggest that the early 3 bolt and late 4 bolt may also interchange.
No intention to dispute, may be wrong, but based on what's in the 67-72 Parts Manual,
1972 was still 3 bolt dampener and short water pump, but 1st year for Torque Command trans.
1973 was the 1st year for the 4 bolt dampener and tall water pump.
Thinking this is why none of the 4 bolt dampener and different pulleys show up in the 67-72 IPM ?
Have a 1973 401, it has 4 bolt Dampener and pulleys, and individual rocker stud heads.
Was bought in 1987ish as a 90k mile complete Ambo wagon and driven home.
Reckon 1973 was last year for individual stud heads, or at least a transitional model year,
but that's an entirely different discussion unrelated to original post in this thread, drifting, oops. Edited by PHAT69AMX - Dec/24/2010 at 7:47am |

A phat, that makes sense. The 71 would be the odd ball because of the BW trannie. 72 would probably be the same as later then other than being a 3 bolt. All agree? My 72 model 401 does have a 3 bolt balancer.
