LOL, I have some memories of my pop doing similar stuff. LOL Thanks for the great story.

This crank problem came along on kind of a funky weekend for me. Things were not going well on a number of fronts and this was just another thing that fried me out. The only good thing was something I thought I wouldn't enjoy, and didn't until later. I ran an "Ethernet" cable from my modem to my sons XBOX in his room under the house. I was not looking forward to going under the house. I had spent 6 friggin weeks going under the house during a complete bathroom remodel finishing just a month ago. Going under the house was NOT something I wanted to do. But I did, and he went under with me helping me.

When you have a 13 year old who spends more time at friends houses than with you, that time was a good time, damn it, it was a great time with my son. Embarrassed

I wouldn't call it a "good" time but my brother and I spent quality time digging 300 feet of new lateral ditches for our septic system years ago.   Of course Dad had to go to work (2nd shift) in the afternoon leaving us boys to dig so many more feet of ditch each day.  I found out there is a science to digging a good ditch.   Now I suppose dads would buy or rent a Bobcat and teach the sons how to use it.   Well, not this Dad.  Joe

CRAP! The manual crank had to be turned .020 (the other one was .010) under so I have to buy new bearings! The other crank was installed in the motor so the boxes from the bearings were tossed so I have to eat the whole thing! CRAP, about $350 down the drain! CRAP!

I do a stupid thing once in a while where I buy something on ebay then find out it was available at the local store for less, that sort of thing. But this takes the cake. I could have bought a hell of a lot of stuff for the car with that money!

Or just had the cone on the back of the crank turned down... or a custom bushing to add the cone -- whichever the case is. I forget right now, don't want to look back since it really doesn't matter -- the point is there was another option that wouldn't have cost as much. Nothing wrong with the way you went about it though. Maybe you can recoup some of your money by putting the 0.010" bearings and crank on e-bay -- just specify exactly which trans the crank is for and why you're selling it. Maybe someone will sympathize with some cash...

That is exactly what I am going to do Frank. That an I'll be putting a number of things that I bought NOS that have since found brand new and feel better with the brand new seals and stuff like that.

Back in the mid-90s, I wired the whole house CAT5 ethernet, all except the bathroom - have since gone wireless. Not as speedy as 1gig Ethernet, but much simpler. Our house has a full basement with a drop-ceiling, so save for the walls, the wiring was simple
I hated going under our first house.  UUGGHH - the original people ran the pipes along the foundation walls, outer perimeter of the crawl space - on the NW corner of the house! So we had a good freeze one winter and busted every single water pipe under the house.
I had to replace it all - and ran it clear away from the foundation walls.
My son was only about 2 months old then so wasn't able to help at all..........

I agree - post your extra stuff here 4 sale, and/or ebay it. at least try to "cut" your loses.

Wow.  Well since we are on this subject...will a 199 crank fit in a 258?  From what Iv'e seen, all 199 engines had an automatic behind them.  And...if not, then what modern transmission can I get to bolt up to this crank?

You need to start a new thread, that is a pretty specialized question and an older thread like this may not be opened by someone who knows your answer.

Not sure if you started a new thread, but in a nut shell all 199/232/258/4.0L cranks will physically interchange, and all tranny's available on those cars interchange also. Only catch is the bell housing change in 1972 to the same as the V-8 (earlier have smaller diameter bell and different bolt pattern). Crank flange is the same.
