I dont think they are cracks, just lines from the casting process.

It's not a thrust washer. It's an oil slinger. Serves no other mechanical purpose.

It's a slinger like he said, however, I have a question - how did the blue paint get on the BACKSIDE of the slinger?
Even if it was installed when you painted, THAT side goes against the sprocket, it doesn't face out, so should never get paint on it.........
This side - goes against the crank gear:
Those dings almost make it look like it was on with that flange edge next to the chain.....
External oil line is a waste of time. It's simply not needed if one does the basics, and makes it like factory did. Factory didn't have issues with distributor gears, so no rebuilt engine should either. They get plenty of oil - IF you've done everything right. It's hocus-pocus to cover the rebuilders shortcomings, not AMCs.
And like they said, that's normal from the casting process........... you'd have seen those from day 1. Edited by billd - May/15/2010 at 6:38am |

Slinger can't be doing much. If that's the direction they go on, mine's been on backwards for the last 30,000

Funny how no one else caught that? This side was definitely facing out towards the timing cover, so...at the very least I've learned which way is correct. Thanks billd.

this is a 6cyl pic but the result is the same...
It will only go on 1 way....backwards it will hit the chain..

See in this photo? The part is sitting on the block - the part that is up is what goes against the gear. Otherwise, the "flange" would be against the chain. Check your TSM........... page 206 of the 1971 book, the 1974 hardcover edition has a better photo - page 1b-17.
The "flat" goes against the gear, the outside edge must clear the chain, so goes out. His painted part should be against the gear, the outside edge must be away from the chain. That sort of shields the front seal as well as sling oil.. It's also often called an oil shield because it shields the seal.
