Had a similar problem with MSD. Turned out to be a height clearance issue. The diz was bottoming on the pump instead of base to cover. Only by several thou's , and was binding up the pump. Figured MSD would have made it fit correctly, but didn't. Wasn't that noticable when swapping them.

If it was mine I would pull it out, pull off the pan and timing cover, clean it out good, inspect cover for oil pump damage, install good used AMC matched gear set if available or new bulltear set.
At a minimum your cover is going to be damaged in the oil pump cavity.
Need to figure out what caused the problem so that it doesn't happen again......if possible. Edited by DragRacingSpirit - May/07/2010 at 9:34am |

Big magnet inside or outside of the pan, unsure if it matters, was just asking
because it sounds like a good idea I might "copy" if on the outside of the pan.

guaranteed it will do it again soon if you don't change the cam gear, matched set from BT or factory set is the way to go.
good luck

Yessir. Better to check now and be sure than don't and be sorry later. |

Yeah and I hate to be the salesman here, but you may want to consider checking everything like most here say for vicious tiny metal pieces, then if you have your original distributor, get a matched set of new gears and a Pertronix Ignitor III for your original. Same potential as the MSD Billet Dizzy plus a built in adjustable Rev Limiter!
My original distributor was the test mule for the Ignitor III and it works just fine. Years ago when I was deep into the HP biz, MSD shipped me a Billet Distributor and a 6AL Box. I just never installed it and eventually sent it on it's way somewhere else.
Plus with your old distributor, you'll have one that doesn't look like it eats Large Pizzas 7 days a week!!!! Eventually, put a new gear on the MSD, then put it on Craigslist, "Not Here"

No stinking large pizzas under my hood. Ugly Taylor battery cables yes...no pizza pies though.
For me...I'll work out all the bugs with the MSD. This thing's got the juice boy...fires up like yesterday...no cranking issues here...that's for sure! That blaster coil arcs like the sun too.

Hey AMCRules, hope you decide to take the extra time to pull the pan and timing cover...I'd hate to see another post in a few weeks with worse news!
Gee Torquey, you're such a good salesman I actually ordered my igniter III and Flamethrower III a few days ago! Even though I had my original dizzy on the hei, the darm thing just took up way too much room...can't wiat to try the igniter, your previous post on installing it was the deciding factor.

Just make sure you bypass the resistance wire since you Must have a full 12 volts to the coil. I found an easy way to do it without any chance of run on. http://theamcforum.com/forum/topic11072_post94844.html#94844
