I woundn't advise it unless you are using a older timing cover with a Professional Product's Harmonic Balancer. Page 3 shows you why.

I HAD to do this one time but there is always the chance of getting aluminum chips inside the engine.

You could remove the outer lip but you would also need a stepped insertion tool to ensure the seal will be installed square and on the original machined surface.
Better would be to machine the lip off to match the bore and set the seal flush with the cover.

Yeah, a LOT of room for a board, or to tap with a hammer when it's in the car.
I use the piece of pipe and a bolt and washers...... can't go in crooked, not possible, and I don't need to swing a hammer against a block in a 4" area...   ;-)

If the cover is off, or as pointed out, must be removed like many years and models, the wood block is good.......... flat, easy to hit squarely.

You can grind or file the lip off an older cover so that the seal can be installed from the front. It makes it easier for seal changes down the road.

Yes very good of you to point that out! Some of them (early) had a lip that prevented changing out the seal from the front.
We are just about to forge new AMC V8 crankshafts.. please check here

Man I wonder if you guys ever had front seals that didnt leak...LOL
 
Best way to install it from the front is to use a 2.5" diameter piece of material and lightly tap it into place. Keep checking it so your not pushing one side in faster than another. If you dont use a 2.5" piece you will bend the lip that makes the seal on the inside diameter of the timing cover. And as a bit of advice the spring side always goes inward.
