Image from AMX-390 V-8 Engine SAE papers,
top right corner of page 19.
Plainly uses "dog-leg" in describing Port Ceiling Contour changes,
but not the exhaust port shape as seen on the outer casting ?
Odd, dashed / solid lines show ceiling changes to the manifold, rather than the cyl. head ?
Port Floor Change from Concave to Convex in the cyl. head is also visible.

Kevin: I think you're right -- the "dog-leg" referenced appears to be in the ceiling of the port from the valve stem toward the outer manifold mating surface. Funny they decided to change the port shape at the manifold mating surface also, with no reference in the text as to why. "Longitudinal" to me means front to back, so that would seem to rule out the water jacket as a reason for the odd exterior port shape -- perhaps it was to retain the bolt holes in their original locations, while increasing the overal cross section of the port?

Head porters have long known not to tamper with the floor of the exhause on "dog leg" heads.

is the section indicated what's being referred to as the "dog-leg" section ?

Yeah, exhaust port floor contour difference is obvious with a finger in the port.
Any noticeable port ceiling difference between the two,
or do early and late AMC heads both share
the same exhaust port ceiling "dog-leg" section ?
