I am working on a 70 390 and have seen the oil filter bypass plug that is sold by Bulltear. Also read about using a filter adaptor that allows you to use a Motorcraft FL-1A oil filter. My question is if you do these changes is there anything else that needs to be done for using these items or can you just switch these out and use the FL-1A filter with the bypass blocked? Thanks in advance for any help Bob

Matt sells a good block off item. I use NAPA 1258 filters with NO issues. If you are racing, then this brings up a whole new area to look at. I have never changed from AMC style filter on any of my builds. The Block off from Matt will do the trick. Jim

If you want to block it off, thread the filter adapter bypass hole with a 3/8 pipe tap and install a pipe plug. Make sure the pipe plug is far enough down so it does not interfere with the oil filter housing when the filter is installed.
Then, screw in a later filter thread adapter which accepts an FL1A filter and run an FL1A filter.

Yep, that's similar to the old method of placing an object that fits the hole, to plug it. There is a lip in the hole to seat, and the adapter bypass plate is undersized, so what ever is used won't be dropped or pushed into the block. I had hand filed (no grinder at the time) a cut threaded section of a bolt to fit, back when I had my 1st AMC, in the 80's. Though the Crown part would be easiest, if readily available. |

Why use the Motocraft FL1A that has a built in bypass valve after going to the trouble of blocking the oil filter adapters bypass valve?? I thought the whole purpose of blocking the bypass is to prevent unfiltered oil from bypassing the filter.
