If the brakes turn free, you can turn one wheel and the other wheel will turn the same direction if the limited slip is working. If they turn opposite, then it’s either an open diff or the limited slip is slipping.

And you can mark the drum to the axle and count how many turns if the pinion it takes for one complete axle turn. That is your ratio.

The best way is to Pull the cover, look for clutches (it will have them for limited slip), and count the teeth to get your gear ratio. But then you will smell like 50 year old gear lube for the rest of the day...
1970 AMX, one step forward, one step back. Both steps cost time and money.

Here is a list of the codes, passed along by my friend Les. The rear axle identification is a letter code stamped on the differential cover flange, or on the right side of the axle tube boss. They were not stamped very well so it is almost impossible to find them.
Standard diff.      Twin Grip    Ratio     Ring gear Dia.
A                      N        3.54:1      8.875
B                      P        3.15:1      8.875
C                      O        2.87:1      8.875
D                      Q        3.91:1      8.875
X                      Y        2.56:1      8.875
E                      R        3.58:1      7.562
F                      T        3.08:1      7.562
G                      S        3.31:1      7.562
H                      U        2.73:1      7.562
K                      V        2.53:1      7.562

The letter code was usually just to identify the ratio.  I can't find where an "S" was used on an AMC20.  "S" code was used on an AMC15 with a limited slip and 3.54 gears.   Like stated above, you'll have to pull the cover to identify if it's open or twin-grip.  Is the diff cover round with no no fill plug?

Through 71(?) AMC used a Power-Lock diff, this was a 2 piece case with 4 spiders bolted together.  After that they used the Track-Lock, which was a 1 piece case with 2 spiders.  The Power-Lock is definitely more desirable.

Not sure about the "S", but AMC cars built with a limited slip diff. had a tag attached to one of the cover bolts stating that. Those tags don't always get reinstalled when people change gear oil or work on the rear end.
That being said, with cars this old you really need to pull the cover and see what it actually has, because it could have been changed from the way it was originally built at AMC.

Restoring my Dad's '73 Base Model Javelin. Doesn't have a Slip Differential. He grabbed a separate "parts" Javelin, and the Rear Axle has a "S" on it.

The previous owner said that's because it is a Slip Differential (What the S stands for).

My Dad was thinking about replacing the current axle, with that one, to get the benefit of the Slip Differential.

Any truth to that? I'll try to get a picture of the axle and post it later.
