overheating 66 Classic 232

I'm having over heating problems with the 232 and wanted to check the water pump. Rebuilt radiator and new thermostat. Could the pump be not circulating but not leaking? I don't see any movement of water in the radiator.

Every pump I've had go bad was leaking out of the hole beside the shaft and or wobbling shaft. Yes the bottom hose has a spring.
It blows hot water out of the radiator with the cap off and idling from cold start.

Have you tried putting a fan in front of the radiator while idling? Could be not enough air being drawn through the rad by the engine's fan.

Not sure what you mean here -- started from cold, warmed up parked at idle, it gets warm, then hot, then boils over? As written it sounds like you start it up then it boils over!

Hose collapse isn't a problem at idle in the driveway, unless it's so visibly bad you couldn't avoid seeing it. If new radiator etc I assume the hoses are good or new.

The "new" thermostat could be stuck closed. The standard test, in the TSM, is to dangle it into boiling water to see that it opens.

In my experience, started from cold (body temperature head and block) idling, with the radiator cap off, the water does not move. If you stick your finger in it it's cold.

As it warms, the thermostat will open sort-of all at once, and with your finger in it, it ougt to go from cold to very noticably warm in a 10 second interval, and too hot to touch a minute or two later.

It will be still (thermostat cold) then moving, sometimes a few tiny bubbles, etc, as it opens.

If that doesn't happen, it's thermostat or pump.

The day I bought the car it over heated on the highway driving home. It ran fine in town but when I ran it several miles at 65 mph the temperture climbed untill it overflowed.

I did several Prestone flushes that didnt help. It got to the point I could not drive it without overheating.
I tried 1/2 gallon of vinegar and water flush and got stuff out that the other flushes didnt get. "might have rusted the fins off the pump"?

I had a shop recore not rod the stock radiator as it was plugged pretty bad and a new thermostat. "I have tried running with and without the thermostat"?

Its been parked for several years because it would not move without overheating, but now I would like to get it back on the road so...

I don't have a water temp gage hooked up right now but When I crank it, sitting in the shop at room temperature, idling, radiator full of distilled water, when it warms up it keeps heating until it starts making a hammering sound like a coffee pot percolating and pushes hot water out of the overflow.

Is it possible for the head to be plugged somewhere?
I haven't done a back flush from the lower hose would that help?
