I have a 74 401 engine that’s getting rebuilt, I will running a comp 280h-10 cam with higher compression pistons. Currently my rebuilder is going through the heads, the springs are getting replaced with what comp recommend and I’m going with a comp magnum rocker kit with push rods. What machining is involved, I know the studs for the rockers will have to be bored out but what about for the springs and guide plates does any additional machining need to be done for this?

There are lots of YouTube videos that will explain the process of doing this. It doesn't have to be an AMC specific video either. Basically how you do a SBC is exactly the same process to do an AMC head. Watch 4-5 videos and you'll understand far better than someone trying to type an answer you'll understand. If a picture is worth a thousand words how many is a video worth?

spring seats will have to be cut. If you have pedestal rocker heads they will have to be milled and then drilled and tapped for the rocker studs. You should be putting in bronze valve guides which will also require machining.

Many have said these guideplates for AMC V8 are good, one piece, and have a head bolt access hole.
Members have posted there are a couple areas in the center area above the choke stove passage that need kissed off. The amount to be milled off of the rocker stud boss heights is... opinions vary... One method is as much as needed to get the roller rocker trunion pivot centerline inline or slightly below the valve stem tip when checked at 90 degrees relative to the valve stem. Machine Valve guide height for retainer clearance and positive valve seals, and the pocket to fit & locate the springs,   Edited by PHAT69AMX - Jun/30/2020 at 12:06pm |

You might want to look at the LS rocker conversion thread assuming you currently have bridged rockers. 280H is not that big of a cam so shouldn't need much more than better springs that will fit the stock springs seats just fine. You can machine the guides for positive seals, but again, is probably not really necessary.

If you want to push the rocker ratio, Comp has a 1.8 bolt on replacement rocker for the LS. #1677.

Maybe he just wants a second opinion to make sure he's not overcharged for unnecessary work? Sheesh, lighten up guys. if you don't want to answer, then don't. Give the guy a break if you don't have anything constructive to add.
