I had an electrical fire with my 81 Concord due to the original battery cables being rotten internally. That was back in 2004. Had to tow the car home. Luckily I had some bolt cutters in the trunk and was able to cut a cable quickly. Easy enough to just change all 3.
A friend of mine back in 1999 got a free 77 caddy because it had intermittent starting issues that garages never solved. We had to change the main cable, it was like 5 feet long. Looked ok but was rotten inside. Had it figured out 30 min after the tow truck dropped it off. Not really totally free, cost the tow and the cable.

Battery disconnects and the two bolt repair terminals are asking for trouble. No connection is more reliable and conducts better than a regular crimped or soldered on terminal, preferably sealed airtight so acid cannot wick into it.

Starter relays can get flakey too.

The connections need to be so tight you cannot wiggle them. ANd the metal inside shiny. Shiny contacts shiny. ANd if you wiggle a cable, ifs trands are visible in the crimp, they should not move. ANd you should feel confident that you can yank on the cable fairly hard and have it not come out or loosen.

This applies to the big fat ground cable from block to chassis too.

I used to have one of those disconnects, but that happened to me all the time, I removed it. The one I had wasn't very well made. Seemed like decent brass, but even with the green knob as tight as I could get it, wiggling the cable still allowed motion.

Do the battery cables have oriiginal clean factory terminals or those patch terminals people like to use with the 2 bolt clamp on ends?
