it's fairly easy... assuming you have some way to bump the motor over (wrench on crank nose, jumper wire on the starter) so it WILL NOT RUN, pull the plug on #1, stick your finger in the hole. Crank it over. When it pharts your phinger out, TDC compression.

what is the correct! firing order for a 232. I was guessing the first one next to water pump is #1 piston. just to be sure all info is welcome.

nearly all inline 6's are 1 5 3 6 2 4 for reasons of balance. Exceptions are rare.

what I can never remember is distributor rotation. I now look at the position of the vacuum advance unit. you know it's a diaphragm and spring inside. engine vacuum PULLS the diaphragm towards the hose nipple. Diaphragm pulls the plate inside, ADVANCING it, meaning EARLIER (it's better called spark lead, easier to remember this). Take the cap off, suck on the hose, see it move, done. Preferably with engine stopped first (oh, it will stop alright if you take the cap off while running).

and why do we spell diaphragm that way, it's just a PITA to type!

I'll dare to say 196 turns left and 232 turns right but maybe not.
