sorry if this is the wrong section, didn't see the fuel tank section.
'79 concord v8 wagon, problem when filling the tank is i can't pump fuel into the tank at the gas station at full speed. even with the pump nozzle barley flowing, i get splashback and the auto shutoff triggers. takes 20min to fill up. haven't had the car long, on the 3rd tank an tried 3 different filling stations and tried every possible nozzle angle when filling, nothing seems to work. after it's full, i get a VERY strong fuel smell and a puddle under the tank. IIRC the PO said he replaced the sender. i suspect oring may have not been replaced or is damaged. Cali car, so i don't suspect rust on top of the tank. any thoughts on how i can correct the fuel filling or where to look for leak/smell? |

For the heck of it, see if the tank is getting heated by the exhaust pipe. |

sound like you have a plugged vent hose or wrong cap or any emission purge valves gone bad back there

there's no emission stuff under the hood anymore.
if it had a charcoal canister, where would it be? i'll have to run out the fuel and drop the tank. could the PO have tightened up the mounting hooks too far causing the tank to sit at a bad angle?

The cap is off when your filling so there is no "pressure" in the tank.
Things to look at: If a new tank fill tube was installed, are the vent slot(s) at the top? If a new tank was installed, is the fill tube vent installed? Some have separate vent tubes - don't know about yours. If a new tank fill tube was installed, is it just inside the tank or did someone leave it long and it goes to the bottom of the tank? Aftermarket universal fill tubes are long and need to be cut for application. Is there something inside the fill tube to block flow? If there is a hose between the tank and fill tube, is it kinked or crushed? If there is a vent tube/hose, is it kinked or crushed?
