Previous owner sprayed rattle can grey primer and then semi gloss black in engine compartment. Any tips to remove it without taking it back to bare metal? Do I dare do thorough surface prep and spray my body color over the rattle can paint? Thanks for any help.

Depends on the raffle can. Sem and Martin Senour both make primers that are compatible with auto paint. Probably other pro paints as well. Problem can be lifting, crazing, and other maladies. Base may go on ok if base coat clear coat but react to the clear. I'd be more concerned about how the metal was prepped. If epoxy was sprayed on it if bare metal. And adhesion. If you are willing to gamble do a small area and see what it does. With the work involved to do it over if it was questionable I'd strip it.

Try brake cleaner first. If that fails then try carb cleaner. Test in an inconspicuous area.

If you're lucky, they didn't properly prep before spraying.. A pressure washer might be all you need to peel the new paint off. You'll want to clean the engine compartment of the caked on grease anyway, so it won't be a waste of time if it doesn't remove the paint

I should elaborate a bit more. There is no grease and grime to clean. Previous owner started a "project", and ran out of desire to see it through. Rattle can paint is over factory paint. Never got engine installed. How many times have we heard this story? I am afraid there will be no easy way out.

As stated, start by pressure washing. A heat gun might cause the rattle can paint to sluff off the factory paint. What ever you do, start with the least aggressive and work to the hot stuff. Paint stripper or walnut blasting are your last choices.

My uncle had his van stolen. The thieves rattle canned the entire exterior black. The police recovered it and returned it to him. He was able to remove about 90% of the black paint with fine (like 1000 grit or finer) sandpaper and LOTS of water. Bob tufcj

Try lacquer thinner and Goof Off too. If it was spray lacquer (not likely but possible) you are on easy street. Joe

Brake fluid will work too good, it'll take off factory baked enamel if it sets on the paint very long.
There are some rattle can primers I'd trust, but I've never seen a single component rattle can paint that i'd trust to put good paint over. I've tried it a few times in the past, it always came back and bit me in the butt.
