How old were/are your TA's? And, what happened to your tires?

Bikerfox... the TA's were obviously too old but frankly I don't remember how old they were. I've had the car since the 80's and with all the other cars in between lost track of their age. They "looked" absolutely new and had great tread, no blemishes or cracks and prolly only had 3,000 miles on them. On the way to St. Louis I got a belt separation and landed in Brazil Indiana trying to source a replacement for the one 245/60/14 TA's (no luck so I replaced both fronts with a set of 14" 70 series tires which were the only 14" they had locally). Then had a belt separation with one of the remaining TA's somewhere in Ohio on the way back but limped that one home. Once home, purchased 4 new TA's. So morale of the story, keep track of your tires age and replace your them every ten years no matter what. BTW, Indiana roads are the worst in the nation. I would take Alaska roads over them.

Thanks, 390, for the warning. Tires do go bad. When I bought Jane a few months ago the two front skinny tires were 14 years old! Got rid of those as soon as I could! Hard to believe the PO drove around on those things.

Tire shops here won't even touch a tire with a date code over about 7 years.
Doesn't matter how nice or new or good or unworn or worn they look - they check the date code. That's because they DO age, and they don't have to crack or "look old" to have serious trouble. I took a tire that was about 8 years old - on an AMC Eagle wheel, to a shop to have them simply break the bead down, clean the bead and rim and refill it. Nope. OK, how about you just break the bead off the rim and I'll take it home and do the rest. Nope. Look, it's going on a car so I can PUSH the car out of my shop, clean my shop, pressure wash the car's engine bay and put it back into my shop. The car will NEVER even leave my property with that tire on it. Nope, get it out of here, we told you no. That was that. The tire LOOKED fine, no cracking or weather checking, and it was on an Eagle aluminum wheel - not some crusty rusty wheel that looked like heck. Nope, it's over 7 years old, liability issues. Running into that more and more. I can see that - I had a camper once with tires that had hardly any miles at all - they looked ok. Can't remember their age but they had to be about 10 years old. Pulling it back from a camp ground about 40 miles away - rubber started peeling off the tire. Some other driver pulled up long me, honked and pointed back at the trailer. I looked back and yikes.......not flat but it wouldn't have taken much with some of the tread gone.
I took to the back roads and limped it home slowly. Made it - whew! |
