I can also confirm the original AMC nuts were lock nuts as well. Any replacement needs to be a lock nut!

K4004 are for AMC as well as Ford and they are locknuts. That's the design. There needs to be some mechanism to stop the nut from turning as you drive. They won't damage the thread on the strut rod unless you are doing something wrong.

the ford nuts are not a perfect solution, they are crimped to act as a locknut . so you can end up ruining the strut rod by running them on and adjusting them. |

As said, the thread is 11/16-18 and same as Ford. The die will be expensive- I know I paid $30+ for mine 20 yrs ago. Ouch, it's now $74 on McMaster.
Good used strut rods aren't that expensive if they need to be replaced. I would place an ad in the wanted section. |

If you turn down the strut rod, then the bushing sleeve would be too large. You would then need to make a custom sleeve. I’m pretty sure the original threads are more than 1/32” deep so you would have to go smaller than 5/8”.
There are reports of people breaking strut rods at the stock diameter, turning them down smaller sounds like a bad idea to me.
You are overthinking this. As long as there are still some threads, the nuts should come off with some heat. I’m pretty sure you would need to apply over a thousand foot pounds of torque before you need to worry about twisting. Edited by akimmet - Jul/08/2019 at 11:48pm |
