i Have a 72 Javelin SST Trying to replace master cylinder, 
drained brake fluid, removed screw under MC blew air 
thru it as instructed in manual. still can't get it off piston

any ideals

Is it with a brake booster, or standard non assist? If non assist, you must undo the nut and bolt that retains the brake apply rod to the brake pedal.

yeah, manual brakes often have a clip that grips the end of the pushrod. it takes some force to get the master off/rod out. screwdriver pry type force. the piston is held into the master cyl casting with a big circlip. one-handed prying screwdriver between master and firewall/bracket won't hurt anything.

if it's power brakes, i can't help you. (i hate power brakes so much i removed them from every 60's car i had them on! lol. yay pedal pressure!)

thanks for your help, I removed the the push rod from the brake pedal,
m/c came right out after that. with m/c in vice removed clip holding push rod
and pulled it out. cleaned it up and installed  in new m/c
