Has anyone else done this?

Using slightly modified Ford main bearings in an AMC V8 to open up a greater selection of modern performance bearings instead of the just 2 or 3 choices we have now:

Quote Finding a tri-metal performance bearing with a harder babbit than stock also proved problematic. Instead, Dorton found that Ford bearings have the correct housing bore and journal diameters. The tangs don't match up, so they were machined off in a lathe. Dorton says cutting the tangs off doesn't increase the likelihood of spinning a bearing--the proper amount of bearing crush will lock them in place--you just have to be careful about lateral placement before bolting down the rod and main caps. Calico coated the ACL bearings for added protection. Because of the unique width of the crankshaft main journals, Dorton had to bite the bullet and use a standard AMC unit for the thrust bearing.

^I believe this build was from a few years ago,
but don't think I've seen this covered here before.

The builder is Keith Dorton, Automotive Specialists, Concord, NC

I think the Ford 351 Cleveland series engine uses 2.75" mains
as does their aftermarket Ford Motorsports 351 Windsor blocks/cranks.

For what it's worth,
 dyno claims are listed as:
525 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 492.3 foot/pounds of torque at 5,100
with a Crane 248/256 @0.050 lift solid roller
Lift is listed as 0.400", if that's the lobe lift it would be .640"

Also,
 what intake is this?

It's listed as an Edelbrock at the end,
I guess it could be a Torker but the carb pad doesn't look rotated like our Torkers.
Maybe it's the Indy big single?

Barry Allen has used a ford main to save a ground down crank. using the amc bearings as a spacer. He did that for Herman Lewis I know...I've never had a problem with King mains for the AMC..Matter of fact I've seen Kings come out way better looking than the clevit H bearings... In the circle track chevies I've been maintaining for a few local guys

^thank you,
I value your opinion & experience.

I don't like the idea of running different mains vs the (stock) thrust main like the article states.

It's mostly a curiosity for me since I never heard of this before,
and even King offers 'better' compound bearings, just not for us.

So we are somewhat limited.
