The B/W and FMX transmissions are a Ravigneaux gear set design, while the Torqueflite, C4/C6 and 350/400 Turbo transmissions are a Simpson gear set design.

From Wikipedia: "Most modern gearboxes employ the Ravigneaux planetary gear set design, which produces 4 forward gears from a single set, or a Lepelletier gear set which provides 6 or more forward gears by adding another standard planetary to the Ravigneaux gear set.

Nevertheless, some new cars are still sold with automatic transmissions based on the Simpson gear set. Such transmissions are typically four-speed, designed in the late 1990s, they are electronically controlled versions of older projects, and are kept in production because they are cheap, reliable, well-known and good enough for the target application."
Buzzman72...void where prohibited, your mileage may vary, objects in mirror may be closer than they appear, and alcohol may intensify any side effects.
