So I'm looking at a narrow 9" on Craigslist not too far from me in SoCal. 43" spring perch centers, 57.5" WMS to WMS. He doesn't know the ratio but says it seems like about a 2.5:1 and it's an open carrier. Asking price is $580. I'm thinking I'd regear the stock 3rd member to 3.50:1 with a Detroit Truetrac and possibly 31 spline Moser axles. I'd media blast the entire assembly and maybe powdercoat the outside. Possibly install a drain plug? I'm gonna be in it for close to $1200 it would seem.

Any thoughts? It's gonna be behind a 200-4R I'm hoping to build soon as well. Car isn't an axle snapping beast. More like a 350hp daily driver that I'd like to run at the track (1/4 mile) every now and then just for kicks. With 235/60R15s in the rear and the .67 overdrive and lockup TC, I'll be turning around 2100 RPM at 70mph. Full throttle 1-2 shift at 5000 RPM should be at 40mph.

How does that sound for a driver seeing occasional track time? Cam is a performer grind with plenty of low end and not much past 5000 RPM. I'm considering shooting for about a 2000-2200 RPM stall. Daily driveable but still good going fast in a straight line?

For what your wanting to do with a 9" rearend it is un needed for the cost.

A Ford 8.8" rearend is a lot easier and cheaper to deal with and would be just as strong as a

stocks parts 9" would be.

I personally would go buy yourself a 8.8" Ford Explorer rearend at any Pick-N-Pull for $150-$200

This way you get either 3.55, 3.73 or even 4.10( If you get it out of some 2-dr Sports).

You also get 31-spline axles, a great Traction Loc posi, disc brakes, and all on 4.5" bolt circle.

It will require that you buy an extra short side axle and narrowing of the long axle tube 3"

You will also have to cut the spring pads off and relocate them with a $20 pair of new ones.

Depending on how crafty you are you can do it all for way under $300 and save all that extra

money for that 200R4 which can run from $2000-$3500 depending how you build it.

You will have a rearend that turns out about 56-1/2" wide and you can place the pads at 43"

This is a very popular rearend swap with the Mopar A-body crowd and Jeep guys love them too.

Tom

I thought about that too. It's a great idea. I did an Explorer 8.8 for a buddy's XJ a few years ago.

I also read about a guy welding 9" tube ends on an 8.8 for some bulletproof bolt on axle shafts. Seemed like a neat custom project.

Either way, I'll need to make an alignment bar to get everything welded up straight. I have axle fixtures somewhere that mount in place of the rollers on my adjustable height roller stands.

You're probably onto something as far as a good cheap solution goes. If I can be less than $500 into an axle upgrade and around a 3.5 R&P ratio, I'm in business. It's gonna cost me around $750-1000 all said and done for the transmission build and swap. I already have a desirable 200-4R. My B&M shifter can do 3 or 4 speed. I'll just need hard parts, TV cable, shift kit, torque converter, lockup kit and some hardware to fab up a crossmember. Driveshaft and tranny yoke should be good.

How does a 2000-2200 stall lockup converter sound with that setup. WOT shifts at 5000 RPM and 1-2 at 40mph. 4th gear 2100 RPM at 70mph?

I'm no expert, but it seems like a good setup with a 350hp/420tq 360 with a performer grind cam. If I end up swapping the 235/60R15 to 275/60R15 in the rear, I should still be cruising ok on the highway.

5000 RPM in 4th gear would be 175mph! Lol, yeah right. Body panels and tire rubber would be flying off at those speeds. Javelins are pretty sleek, but I'm pretty sure there are a lot of wind resistance factors that would prevent this car from ever seeing anything over 150. It starts making some shaky wind noises at 130mph currently and makes me nervous. Heck, I hit 121mph according to the GPS on the way to work tonight. Silly Camaro wanted to play games...

Just imagine if I got it all buttoned up tight, upgraded tires, and with just the right suspension setup/stance had a 47 year old daily driver that would go over 150mph on the highway. Glad I upgraded to front disc brakes at least...

There's an 8.8 out of a 1996 Explorer nearby for $425. It's a 3.73 ratio posi differential and has disc brakes. Does that sound like an alright price?

Hit up South Bay Auto Wreckers in Chula Vista. Ask for Mike. I think the phone number is 619-421-5565. His family has owned it for decades. I picked a 69 Rambler from Mike at the beginning of the year. He may have an 8.8 and his prices are usually very fair. Tell him Matt the Rambler guy recommended you call.

If not them, there are several other wreckers in that area of town. Good luck.

i got my Mustang axle from a place in San Pedro (LA area), called FORD ONLY or something. straightforward place, no bull. lots of axles on hand. there were cheaper places but i got tired of wrong info, errors of whats in stock, etc. they even cleaned the worst of the gunk off it for me without asking.

I kinda think a 9in is over kill and you pay for it. An 8.8 gives you better options and a better price.
Me, I have my eye on an old MOPAR 8 and 3/4 that I can bolt in an call good to go.
