I have no trans brake and don't plan on one. I foot brake it but am having trouble holding the car back. I have 4 wheel disk brakes with just stock 94 Jeep Cherokee rotors and calipers. Has anyone done a pinion brake or any other trick you are willing to give up. I don't want to go to an 8" converter as mine works so good but another 200 rpms would get me there.

Try leaving as close to idle as you can and see if it flashes to what you need. You may be able to send your convertor and have it worked for what you need.

Donno about foot brake launches... i'm with amccar on a good torque converter upgrade. Unless you are pushing 6000 RPM at launches, an 8 incher is pointless. You can probably sell your used racing converter to compensate for the change.
I will be doing dual caliper front brakes (a short lived mod from Donohue on the 71 Javelin), you can probably do something like that to assist with your launches. Utilizing a line lock will keep the rear brakes from being engaged. |

My car even with 4w drums held, but it was with a 5500 stall. I can go 4000 without moving car much on the brakes. I would get the converter done before stuff like more calipers. Obviously I still drive mine on the street and tow a trailer with it so no issue with a high stall

Discs are very poor for holding at the line; drums are much more effective due to their self energizing nature. We've been fairly successful with 4 wheel drums and a box/line loc as a poor mans tbrake.
Discs need max effort to hold under those conditions, and there is no vacuum for a booster. Maybe a small dia MC bore and a really big foot would work. For a race only car go with a quality 8" converter without question. Or for a street car like Tony's Edited by Ken_Parkman - Feb/18/2016 at 4:46pm |

I stall well below the converter's flash point and get stronger launches. My converter flashes at 3,200 RPM and I stall on the starting line at 2,000. No problem holding it back with discs.

A line loc would probably be the way to go. Only problem is you have to coordinate your finger on the button with your right foot. Practice would get your reaction times in the competitive range. I race a couple of different cars all with different set ups. A footbrake car, a stick car without line loc and a transbrake car. One thought. How about putting in an adjustable proportioning valve. That way you can put more pressure to the front wheels to get better holding power at the line.

a linelock works great in the burnout box but sucks at holding the car for staging, the grip on the rear tires just push the car ahead.even with the foot brake it will push it but is much better.i have disk and dums with a good 8 inch converter.i keep trying to put a trans brake in every year but the money aways ends up somewhere else in the car
