if i remember correctly the early flywheel does not have a step to center it 71 back 72 up has one right ?

If you are talking 390/360 they should have a 4.500" recess for the crank flange.

my friend has a 360 not sure what year but the crank is flat no ridge in the center  was told it was a 71 motor  has 291c heads

AMC changed transmissions in 1972 they use Mopar torqueflite, 1971 down for maybe 4years AMC use borg-warner transmissions. the flywheels for the B-W is flat in the center, the flywheel for the TF has the step in the center. hope this helps

71 Back V-8 Flat Flange Crank and small pilot bearing hole...72 up step flange crank and large pilot bearing hole for the torque flight converter......
