First post and I predict there will be many more...lot's of good knowledge here and I appreciate it! I live in Alabama and just got my hands on a 68AMX 390 car in good shape...except it's been sitting for 25 years. I did a search but couldn't find my answer clearly. The 390 is headed to the machine shop soon. It had the M12 but it's in bad shape. I've found a T10 and I'm trying to dig up the rest of the parts for the swap. I've got a '83 360 donor engine in great shape so I plan on swapping heads, manifolds at least. It also has a flywheel. I know there's a crank flange adapter (bulltear) but will this flywheel even work if it's balanced with the rest of the rotating assy (I know there were other differences)?

If you have it balanced to the 390, and use adapter I see no reason it will not be fine. If it doesn't have the the large pad on the back side, it may require alot of counter drilling to loose weight. Hope this helps

Or spend the money to get a new flywheel?

Man, it would sure be convenient and cost effective if I could make this 360 fw work...any other wisdom on that?
Hayes and Centerforce seem to be the only new ones I've found...400 and nearly 600 respectively. I reckon I need to start shopping for a used 68 fw. |

There's no problem using the 360 flywheel as mentioned, just need to have it balanced with the 390 stuff, providing you can get a spacer to register it to the flat crank. I did the same with my AMX it was a 401 auto swap to a T10 and I used a flywheel from a 360. I also had one match balanced to a 401 flexplate for another engine since it was already rebuilt.

On ANY non-virgin AMC motor/flywheel/flexplate combination that I don't know the origins of or putting parts together, I ALWAYS have the rotative assembly balanced.

He mentioned putting '83 360 heads on a 390; is that a good idea?

Headbolts on the 68/69 engine are 7/16". The 83 heads have 1/2" holes for 1/2" bolts. A stepped alignment spacer can be installed in the block to keep the 7/16" headbolts and align the 83 head onto the 68/69 390. 83 heads are dogleg. will need to find dogleg headers or exhaust manifolds. The compression ratio will be a bit less with the 83 heads, better for low grade fuels. Valve sizes are the same, ports could be better on the 83 head, what part number are they 090?? 090's are refuted to be the best AMC head, apparently better than 291C or 502.
