I just got a 360 with automatic. I,m going to put it in my 73 Gremlin which has a 304 3-speed manual trans. Question is: which flywheel do I use? the original 304 or the one that came with the 360 auto? I want to use the manual trans. Is this 1971 360 internally balanced or externally? I'm kind of new at this stuff, can anybody tell?? Any info would really help! thanks

Is this 360 a 1971? then you will have to get a 1970-'71 360 flywheel.......1972-up they changed the crankshaft flange for the chrysler TF......so in other words, a 1972-up flywheel will not fit.
All AMC V-8's from 1966-'91 are externally balanced.. and every engine is balanced differently, for example, a 304 will have a lighter weight than a 360,therefore, they are not interchangeable.

Understanding is all AMC V8's are externally balanced and
have engine size specific flexplates, flywheels, and dampeners.
1 or 2 may interchange, don't think so, but not sure.
Guess ya know the auto uses a flexplate, and the manual uses a flywheel. AMC crankshafts changed the rear flange starting in '72 & up for TorqueFlites.
Not sure if pilot bushings changed when the crank flange changed.
Someone here should know more specific details about manual trans to crank flange.
The 360 auto should be a Borg Warner trans, someone here may want to buy it.
Don't scrap it, gettin' hard to come by. Edited by PHAT69AMX - Sep/21/2007 at 4:10am |

The manual flywheels don't distinguish between early and late crank flanges. You need a 360 manual flywheel to use the manual trans.

so I don't need a" 1971 manual flywheel only" to fit my 73 trans? Any year will work as long as it is a 360? What about the balancing?

Think balancing will be ok as long as it's a 360 flywheel, has a balance weight cast in.
Watch out for late model flywheels, not sure, maybe like '89 & up,
as Chryco changed AMC's to a Mitsubishi starter and the ring gear depth changed, and you'd have to use the mitsu starter.
