I have a 1970 AMX with a consul shifted 3 speed auto transmission. I believe it's the BW MB11. I want to change the trans filter and am wondering if I can use the Royal Purple trans fluid. I am pulling the torque converter and going to get as much fluid out of there as possible as well. Will I have any problem with the Royal Purple.
Thanks Ron |

There is no trans filter. Just a screen that can be cleaned once the pan is dropped. As for fluid, it called for Type A. Nowadays I believe that's some version of Dexron. I understand that Type F can also be used successfully. There may be other fluids that could be compatible as well. I'm sure other Forum members will chime in with the latest information.

We have a sticky post at the top which says to use Dexron III in all AMC automatic transmissions, so provided you are using Royal Purple Dex III, you should be fine.
Also that transmission has a metal fabric screen rather than an actual filter, I'd say just clean it an re-install it unless it is damaged. Edited by WesternRed - Jan/22/2019 at 7:16pm |

Swepco makes some of the best hydraulic fluid. I use their 714 in a 15wt., sometimes a 20wt. Great performance in stock and modified transmissions. It has great properties, friction characteristics, antiwear, etc. One gearbox that works smooth, quick and sure with it is a BW Velvet Drive marine gear.
Stays in grade, shifts well, good with high temp.

type F won’t make your clutches come apart. But it is less friction modified and will have a little more grip. It’s an inferior fluid these days.
