Found another one I know something about. :)
Dex/Merc came out when Gm was using Dexron 3 and Ford was using Mercon IV. The fluids were close enough in design that the independent fluid manufacturers were able to come up with Dex/Merc, which can be used in either company's transmissions from that era. IIRC (it's been a few years since I've been out of the business), Mercon IV was formulated to give slightly more solid shifts, and GM wanted Dex 3 formulated for a smoother shift and ride. Again, Dex/Merc sort of split the difference there. I'm blanking about the additive package, but if you believe the reports (rumors?) of Ford ATF damaging seals on non-Ford transmissions, it'd be another reason to try to get pure Dex 3. |
