I just put in a new filter & will be putting the pan back on shortly.

The Manual says Type"A" AQ-AFT Suffix "A"

I have seen Dexron III , IV , & VI.

What should be used?

Can I mix different brands if they are the same type?

Thanks.

Noel

Yes you can mix different brands.  I have read that any Dexron prior to Dexron IV is backward compatible with the older blends of transmission fluid.  Also, I think if you search on the net, you can still find Type A tranny fluid but most people don't bother to do that.

Thanks for the advice - just to be clear you are saying that I can use dexron III.

I've used Dexron III in two Flash-o-matics and never had a problem.  One a '64 Classic and the other a '65 American.

i used dexron II in an air-cooled flashomatic that i personally put 350,000 miles on (two full teardowns in 21 years plus fluid change/band adjust every 3-5 yrs). it's the right fluid to use today.

I’m not tranny fluid savvy; what is dexron/mercon and how does that relate to the just dexron?

I also am not tranny fluid savvy - the manual calls for Type A and all my investigation took me to Dexron as the alternative to Type A. This was confirmed by the good people on this site as well as others I have spoke to. The technical explanation really isn't important to me as I wouldn't understand it any way...

I hesitate to post as I am the heretic here. My car - 327 flash-o-matic - has run on type F since it was nearly new. My dad always said it slipped on type A when it was available. Bill D is facepalming right now..."Suzanne, don't tell them that....". I figure my car has been happy with it for 53 years. If I changed to Dex, it would likely blow up.
