My starter is on its last leg.
I’m almost considering blowing 200 on a mini starter.
Anyone here not using the stock rebuild ford types?
Mean green seems to be a thing, power master makes some too.

Considering the starter used on these sixes was the same starter used to kick over the V8s of much higher compression that are much harder to crank over, few people find the need to use a more powerful starter.

Degrease, test the windings, file the field contacts, sand the commutator, install new brushes, new bushings, a new Bendix drive, and repaint your current starter. It'll be better than a Chinese remanufactured one and will cost you about $50 and a day of work. I stopped buying new or remanufactured stuff a long time ago and started rebuilding my quality original stuff with much better results.

That sounds like work.
Ain’t nobody asked how to recondition the stock starter.
Thanks though

For a stock 6, a mini starter is a waste of money.

hi, I thought about this as well, mostly for weight savings and maybe the "bling" factor, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Let us know if you decide to go that way. good luck, gz

I think we all know I don't usually agree with FSJunkie, but in this case I do.

About 12-13 years ago I was in a rush getting ready to go to a race and my J-10 with a 360 wouldn't start no matter how much boost I put on it, wouldn't turn a mm.
So I crawled under a 77 Gremlin 232 parts car I had, and removed the starter, put it under the Jeep, took me about 20 minutes, and was off to the races.
A few weeks later I removed it and gave it a general clean up, and installed new brushes.

Last year it got weak, I took it off, done all that FSJunkie is suggesting, cost me about $20.00 for the brushes, and maybe a couple hours work.  Still using that 232 starter that came out of a 77 Gremlin in about 2005 in my 360.

That 360 is a 75, with 70 heads,  I figured the compression ratio years ago with pistons I have, and the just slightly milled 70 heads is about 9.5 .

But go with the tiny little starter if you want, some are junk, some are not, but they're all so pretty. Lose a couple lbs weight, gain a little extra room, in a spot where nothing is close.  Spend a few bucks you evidently don't need, and keep your hands clean.

I think the OP should go "blow 200" on a mini starter and let us all know how it works out. I'm sure we'd all like to know what we're missing out on.

I just want to know what 200 things are getting blown.
