Can it be reset in the car?It tripped when I had my diff. out & have no rear brakes in my Javelin. I'm afraid I'll round off the fittings if I try to remove it completely.

It can be reset but you will need to be carefull doing it. Use a socket to remove the plastic switch, it's probably not super tight as they are plastic threads. It sometimes helps to relese the brake line preasure. With a pair of needle nose pliers carefully pull up on the plastic plunger inside the block until it is loose. Then set the plunger back into the valve and reinstall the switch.

The plastic plunger is very small and has a small brass ring and a spring on it also. Be careful cause the parts are pretty small and easy to loose. Don't know if any of the AMC Parts vendors still sell these or not. Edited by PHAT69AMX - Mar/03/2020 at 9:42am |

So, what I'm hearing is that it's still best to remove to do it. What do you use to plug the lines so I don't empty the master cyl.?

The master cylinder will not empty if it and the valve are still in good shape. The switch assembly does not see brake fluid. Also, Galvin's (http://www.ramblerparts.com) carries new switch assemblies.

You are talking about the pass side firewall mounted differential switch
not the brake pressure balance valve on the pass side frame rail right ?
There is nothing to "trip" in the press balance valve on the frame rail.
The firewall diff switch actuates and turns on the brake light
when the brake line pressure is lost in the lines going to one wheel.
Yes, there is no fluid in the cavity beneath the nylon nut.
It is a dry cavity. That is why the nylon nut only needs to be finger tight.
But once it actuates and the sysytem is fixed and blead without removing it
residual brake system pressure can make it hard to pull out the tiny nylon pin.

Maybe I'm confusing things-I'm getting no brake fluid to the rear brakes & the brake warning light is on in the dash-don't care too much about the brake warning light but do want fluid to the rear axle. What needs to be done?? I was told the valve with all the lines leading to it on the passenger side of the firewall needs to be reset, right? |

Yes that could possibly be it.
The Nylon Nut and Spring / Brass Ring / Nylon Pin under it
need to be removed whenever the brakes are worked on and
before the sysytem is blead. This is what turns on the in-dash brake light.

And this is done with the valve in the car, right?

Yes, unplug single wire lead, remove nylon nut, remove Pin/Spring/ Ring.
While they are removed bleed the brakes, starting at farthest rear.
Brake system pressure will re-center the Differential switch plunger.
Once recentered, the Pin when re-installed, will no longer be grounded
and the Dash Brake warning light should go out.
Have had my '69 AMX since 1985.
Seems like the first time I tried to remove it, it was too tight,
the hex broke off, and was able to get a new replacement
from an AMC Dealer. Should have bought a couple few back then.
Ever since then it only gets put in finger tight.
It can be challenging to get to, and the Pin tough to remove
especially if there is now pressure in the system.
Maybe crack the bleed screws to relieve system pressure.
I used hemostats to gently pull out the Pin / Spring / Ring
and there are tiny, maybe 1/4" long and 1/16" diameter.
