IMO do a compression test.
It kinda sounds like exhaust valves are toast. |

In park what rpm does it idle at? Can you adjust it down to 650ish or so and check the timing? That way the mech advance won't be coming in yet.

The car only has 28,777 miles on it supposedly, it is really clean for a 50 year old car. I will try all of the suggestion and see what happens. It starts right up and no smoke. I don,t know how long it sat before I got it. Could it possibly be a bad power brake booster causing a vacuum leak?

It has to "stir up" the Transmission Fluid and run the Trans Pump when in gear.
It takes a bit to "stir up" and "heat up" and "loosen up" the Auto Trans Fluid imho A Stock Torque Converter holds a lot of Trans Fluid and are pretty low stall speed. imho when tuning an Automatic you have to go out and drive it or at least power brake while it in gear a couple few times against the torque converter to get it heated up and loosened up to see what the actual in gear idle speed drop is going to be...
