My 1959 Rambler needs to have a working emergency brake. This is the view of the cable under the car. I am comparing it to page 6 of the Technical Service Manual. Shouldn't there be some kind of a "keeper" or lock of some type on this cable to secure it to the bracket (pictured)?

yeah, there's one of those U-shaped clips, i think it's the same type that retains the end of the fixed brake line at the rear of the chassis, where the flex brake hose connects, and same as the one that clips the front flex brake line to the hole int he fender. it's a common part, you might even get one from the "HELP" section of even AUtoZone.

that said, you can "get away with" not having one -- unless there's excess slack in the cable, there's not enough slack for the cable housing end to withdraw from the hole in the bracket.

eg. that's not an acute problem with your parking brake :-)

Thanks. I will look at the other end of the cable to see what it looks like and link to the part supplied. I need a few other parts anyway.

I agree that one or more clips are missing. You might be able to use a "C" clip or an "E" clip from a Harbor Freight assortment.
