Helping a friend assemble the 390 for his Machine and he showed me the distributor that came out of it. The car was last run some time in the '70s. It's the correct casting with some kind of electronic ignition module in it. Did AMC offer that as an option in '70 or is it more likely an aftermarket piece?

It could be an old Hayes ignition conversion from the 60's and 70's. Might even still work.

There was some sort of "capacitive discharge Ignition system" sold through the Group 19 parts listing. It looks like a standard distributor with the stock cap and vacuum module, but it has a different wiring plug and some sort of finned box similar to an MSD 6a box that goes with it.

Mopar used that type of CD ignition as an aftermarket performance offering in the late '60's also.  It still used the points as the trigger though, no electronics in the distributor.  I couldn't easily round up a photo of the Mopar unit but from memory the control box looks just like the Group 19 AMC piece.

From the description it does not sound as if it is OEM, but if you have the distributor number it can be looked up in the TSM to see if it is an OEM distributor for 1970. The probability is that it is aftermarket but the distributor might actually be correct for the engine and it has a conversion piece in it.
Depending on what you want to do with it, remember it is a GM distributor and swap meets are full of them for parts to put it back together as an OEM style unit if you want to do that.

GM offered a "transistorized" ignition system starting in 1965. They had different configurations in the years 1965-1973 before the HEI was introduced. You can google it and maybe find some comparative information.

The AMC CD ignition was the GM K-66 transistorized ignition that was used in Vette's, GTO's and 442's. Makes sense since it was designed for the D-R distributor housing, so it would be basically a bolt in. It is in the Group 19 listing but it is not on the dealer installed brochure.
