Used for feeding turbos, but really great pumps. Not sure if they would take long hours of continuous running, but 4 gpm should be enough. Says the large model will run a continuous 40 psi.

Thanks, that abstract is excellent and mostly is what I am thinking of!

NO dry starts.

60 psi all day every day.

The #1 nightmare in a AMC V8 defeated.

Reduced horse power loss at high rpms is a bonus.
heck, using creative alternator controls you
can dump the field in the alternator for a burst of power
running off the battery only.

Interesting idea and I don't see why it can't be done. Pumps and seal have come a long way with viton materials. We have pumps running in way worse conditions at work on machines than what one would be in a street or drag car and IMO a big step ahead of the factory pump. A little research on how much volume and pressure an engine would need and finding the proper pump are the first steps to making this work.

I've also wondered why someone hasn't tried adapting a crank driven pump from a newer engine onto an AMC motor. With CAD and CNC machines nowadays........ Wink

Funny but this where I started brainstorming this.
Adapting a GM Geroter pump to an AMC V8.
Being externally balanced makes it a problem.

Electric solves everything in one shot.

What I am scheming about now is a Geroter pump electrically driven.

I hope you can make it a 3 section pump for a dry sump system. Getting the oil pump drag load off the distributor gear would be a plus.

The issue to make this work is finding a continuous duty motor
that makes around 3 hp.

Adapting said motor to a existing pump is relatively easy.

The electric motor in question has to be capable
of lasting for thousands of hours at it's rated power and rpm.

For what it's worth, I've been running a Mallory electric pre-lube oil pump in my Javelin for years.  My Javelin tends to sit sometimes for a couple of weeks without being driven, and I hate those cold starts. The pump is connected to the ignition hot side and runs for about 30 seconds when I turn the key on. I usually have to switch the key off and back on before I get oil pressure at the gauge. Wouldn't be without it on an application like this.  I don't believe Mallory still makes this setup, but I did find something on Amazon that would work.  You really need a gear type pump as a electric fuel pump just does not have enough heuvos to first of all, pull cold oil from the pan and then push it into the engine.  Here's a link to what I found.

I ordered one just because.....

But what I am thinking of is more like
a electric replacement for the stock pump.

For drag racing a Harley geared starter motor driving
a stock pump would be ok.
For continuous duty something different is needed.

I think any electric pump for continuous use would draw an awful lot of amps, making the alternator work harder so I don't know if you would gain anything. Secondly, the stock pump is speed sensitive, meaning it pumps more oil the faster the engine turns.  i don't know what the max volume of the stock pump would be at any given engine speed. An electric pump may over pump at low speed and under pump at high speed, kind of like trying to use an electric waterpump on the street. For a drag only application, it may work fine.  Keep us posted on what you learn from this project. It sounds interesting. You know, a lot of new cars are using electric vacuum pumps and electric steering assist, but they are engineered for the application.  That's how they do the self parking feature.  Just a few algorithims in the steering assist motor.  Take a peek under the dash on some of these new cars.  Pretty interesting.
