Is there any harm in running ported vacuum directly to the egr valve, and bypass the cto switch and exhaust back pressure doo-hicky? Thanks.

the cto is there so the EGR isnt operating until the engine is warmed up......when the engine is cold you dont want EGR.....it wont run very well.....but you can do whatever you want.

Yes, I suspected that but was wondering if anyone does it. Where can you buy a CTO?

When you buy an egr valve does it come with the back pressure doohicky?

You need the number off the EGR valve. The original one. That number is what you need to replace it with. Alot of the aftermarket ones really don't work well.

It's not going to hurt anything to just disconnect the EGR from vacuum as long as it seals. EGR only works when the engine is at full operating temp (hence the CTO) and combustion chamber temp is really hot. Then it lets a little exhaust gas in to dilute the fuel/air mixture and thus lower chamber temp at idle or low speeds -- doesn't operate at higher speeds above around 30 mph. This reduces one of the polluting gases at idle when the combustion chamber temp is high. With few cars even running EGR (other things reduce combustion chamber temps, or that problem has been designed out), you're not going to make much of a contribution to pollutants, especially since the car isn't driven a lot.

Actually, the only times the EGR valve is closed is at idle and WOT. some engines will spark knock when the EGR isn't working. Particularly Older Fords.

YES!!!! I am getting some possible spark knock and that is what led me to investigate this EGR system. I'm going to try some higher octane gas and when time allows, will see why it(egr) isn't working and fix the problem.

GZ, I didn't see a cto on Rock Auto. Haven't checked other sources yet.....I'll wait to see if I need one.
