I always ran the 800 eddie on the air gap , but I when i was up in Reno for the show I went to Summit and pulled the new HP Ultra 850/750 and the old tried and  true 830 hp.Now common sense told me the new carb which looked great would be hands down on a old 30 year old carb. I pulled the new one out of the box and it was light and well,,, CHEAP looking and felt cheap . The summit rep was a true gear head and told the pros and cons on both and knew what he was talking about . I went with my gut and his help and bought the old 830. Cant wait to get it installed and over to my holley guy and get dialed in.

I did what you are doing now. When my motor was done the shop recomended a 750 to 850 for the carb and I went with the 800 Thunder series and had problems right from the start. First after running it for a short time it didn't seem right so had it pulled apart at the shop and found one float not sealed all the way and it was full of gas. Once that was replaced had to adjust it to get the secondarys to open up, not a big deal but you read about how these Edelbrocks are put them on and no need to adjust them like the Holleys well this one wasn't like that at all. The Edelbrock always seemed to rich at Idle and not enough at higher rpms. I contacted Edelbrock about it being rich at idle and their response was to put catalytic converters on it. Well I didn't do that. My brothers motor is almost the same build as mine, same bore and the pistons were made the same. The camshafts, rockers are different make and he used a different intake and carb, Holley 750 DP. Well his car starts right up and mine always took some time, the longer it sat the longer it seemed for it to start, so I decided to try the Holley, I went with the 650 Ultra DP, I don't race the car  so after some research decided the 650 would be ok for my use. Since putting the Holley on I haven't had to adjust it at all, the car starts right up like it should and you can stand behind the car and it is not so rich. The secondarys  work great and I haven't had to have it worked on. While I know the Edelbrock that I got was probly the exception and maybe could have been adjusted well enough for my car, I am staying with the Holley.

I have found the 800 Thunder series is not as good as the 650 Thunder series which is too bad because the 650 is the best all around no hassle carb I have ever used. On two seperate new 800s, the car stalls on a hard RH turn at low speeds no doubt from fuel slosh overflowing the fuel bowl and drowing out the plugs. Doesn't seem to do it on a hard left turns but nonetheless very disappointing to say the least.

I put Edelbrock carburetors on two things, and just those two things....

eBay and Craigslist.

Holley's or EFI are the only ways to go.

My 600 Eddy Performer used to do exactly that. I went to a Holley Red elec pump which raised my fuel pressure and the problem went away.
