hi, we are rebuilding a 77 Hornet AMX, 6 cyl rear axle, got the Eaton TrueTrac LSD, 27 spline both axle and LSD, axle won't go into TrueTrac, is this common, or are we doing something wrong? Part # is 912A569 TT Dana 35.
Thanks, gz anyone ever used one of these?

hi, the adventure continues.....
Well, we found out why the 27 spline axle won't fit into the 27 spline LSD. I happen to have a parts car 82 Eagle sedan, (rusted beyond redemption) with a broken, snapped in two, left rear axle. (yes, I literally drove the Wheels off that car, well over 300k miles.!) Anyway, I pulled the broken axle out, and guess what?, it slipped into the new LSD no problem! So, what is the difference between the 77 Hornet Dana 35 axle, and the 82 Eagle Dana 35 axle? The spline OD is exactly the same. The difference is in the ROOT of the spline. The 77 spline root is 1.075" OD, and the 82 spline root is 1.050" OD, a .025" difference. So just get a couple of Eagle Axles? No, they are the wrong length for the Hornet housing, an 1 1/2" too short. Hornet bare axle housing is 52 3/8" end to end, and axle is 30 3/8" long. So, ok, I believe I need axles from a 81+ Spirit or Concord. Anyone have a couple? Or anytime after AMC sold that axle design to Dana. Any drivetrain specialists out there? Confirm/deny/tell me I'm stupid :), etc. thank you, gentlemen!, gz

hi, we are persevering. I guess not a lot you are rebuilding the AMC 15 axle. :) Over 90 views and not one response! Wow!
Anyway, education is expensive, and we have learned a thing or two. One, pre 80s AMC 15 axle shafts don't fit into modern parts, like LSDs (limited slip differentials), and possibly new carriers, though the vendors SAY they do. Two, post 80s AMC15 axle shafts DO fit into modern parts. I managed to find ONE AMC 15 axle shaft on ebay, from a Spirit/Concord, same length as 77 Hornet, slightly deeper spline depth, (.025"), and it fit the new limited slip diff. fine. However, one is not enough! So, I took the 77 axle shafts to a local machine shop, and they deepened the splines for me. Not cheap, but what can you do?! Fits fine now. There may be one more hurdle, a spacer between them that may/may not be right, but one step at a time. One thing I'm fairly sure of, this will be possibly the MOST expensive, and "hopefully" best built 77 Hornet AMC 15 axle out there! :) 3.55 limited slip. Torsen type. And no, I don't want a Ford 8.8! :) thank you, gz

Sounds like fun, I guess not too many persevere with the AMC 15. We were lucky, all the Aussie 6 cylinder Hornets came with the AMC 20.

It was a parts issue when shipping to Australia. Since all big cars
used the AMC 20 with 232 or larger six, and V-8 Hornets were sold there
too, it was just easier to ship only AMC 20 axles. Made parts and
working on them later simpler too. There may have been a local supplier
for the axle assemblies, having them only produce one would have made it
easier and kept volume up to a more profitable level. |

thanks for your responses gentlemen! This is a 6 cylinder car, using the original 2bbl 258 from 1977, though it is quite seriously worked over. +.030, Lunati "Voodoo" cam 256/264, Harlan Sharp roller rockers, SBC intake 1.84/exhaust 1.5 valves with new guides and positive seals, one piece Comp Cams pushrods, Cloyes True Roller timing chain with anti walk cam button, everything blueprinted/rebalanced, 82 Eagle intake/exhaust manifolds into 2" exhaust with modern high flow catalytic converter, DUI ignition, Motorcraft 2150 1.08 from a 76 Matador 304 #47 jets, rebuilt/rebushed by me. And.. behind it is a brand new WC T5 from Modern Driveline, with a custom shifter location and a .73 OD.
When I bought the car a few years ago, it was more or less all original, with SR4 trans/2.73 rear, but REALLY tired. It ran, but could barely get out of its own way. Now I have an open 3.08 rear, and along with the new engine/trans, its a different car! Can keep up with modern traffic! The 3.55 limited slip will be icing on the cake. As for hp? I have no idea what hp this engine makes, but its a LOT more than stock. My engine builder, an older, semiretired honorable gentleman, told me it should be good for .9 to 1.0 or so hp/inch. Again, don't know, but sure feels like it! It may even need a little more carb. Anyway, the adventure continues, thanks gentlemen, gz

With a 3.08 fifth gear is pretty useless until 70 mph or so! A 3.31-3.55 gear will be much better. Watch your first gear ratio though. With 3.55 you might have so low a first gear that it's pretty useless too. 3.31 might be a better match. That would put you into running in fifth at 64+ (2000 rpm cruise speed, with 26" diameter tires), 3.55 only raises it 4 mph @2000 rpm though.

hi, yes I tried to find a 3.31, but they are not available anywhere. Also, the LSD is compatible with 3.54+ gears only, so, 3.55 it is! first gear is 2.95 i believe, so should be tolerable. thanks, gz

That was made for an Eagle. Swap in an Eagle rear and it's good.
