I am working on a scrambler diff for a club member that the original twin grip carrier was removed. He has found a carrier dated 12 of 69. This would make it a 70 model year part. It is missing the rubbing block inside. The person he bought it from tells him it is not used on 70 model year cars and will be fine. I dont see a way to set end play without the rubbing block unless you use aftermarket axles. Any feed back?
Thanks

I think they might have stopped using it when they went to the one-piece design, maybe that is what he is thinking? Or he is thinking that you don't need it when running 1-piece axles.

I believe the block is to set the wheel bearing preload

Mopars use the same setup,

when I went from a limited slip to a spool in a Mopar Dana 60 I switched to "Green" non adjustable sealed wheel bearings at the same time so I didn't need to use the spacer block any more.

It was a two piece carrier and was missing the two buttons inside. My problem was the owner of the carrier was told it did not need them. So I was kind of stuck between two people. It does need them and I found out that Chrysler uses basically the same power lock carrier in there 8 3/4 diff. Difficult pieces to find for an AMC but easy to find for Chrysler and they are the same part.

how soon do you need the buttons? I am ordering one pieces axles and if everything works out I won't need the buttons. I could mail them to you when i am sure every thing is good. I'm looking at two week before everything is together. maybe a week

A two piece carrier MUST have the two buttons if you are running factory axles.  If running a one piece axle they get removed...sounds like "jeep5" can hook you up.  The buttons commonly fall out when the carrier is removed or a single axle is removed.  They are held in by a small roll pin and when the pin breaks they are no longer held in place.  Like "kirkwood" said the one piece carrier no longer uses the two buttons, the axle ends contact the center pinion gear pin.

Hope this helps

A slight correction. The one piece differential twin group and the 'open' differential use a thrust block.
