So it was an aftermarket company installing the diesels, not AMC. Explains the high price and rarity! I would assume it was the Renault 2.1L (85hp/132 ft-lbs... about the same rump the 2.5L gas engine) as used in the 85-87 XJ, but may have been something else. 94-01 XJs could be had with a 2.5L VM Motori turbo diesel (114 hp/221 ft-lb). The HP numbers were at a lot lower rpm than the gas engine, that's one reason a 2.1L/85hp turbo diesel felt about the same as the 2.5L/120hp gasoline engine... at least at normal operating speeds of 1500-2500 rpm. Diesel peaked at 3750 rpm, gas at 5250.

Neither. I tried to post a link to a pdf document on the Eagle's Den that tells you everything there is to know about the turbo Diesel Eagles, but the link did not work. Just google search "AMC Eagle Turbo Diesel". It's the first result that comes up. Read it. From the document: In early 1980 AMC contracted with San
Fernando, California based Specialized Automotive Engineering (SAE) to retrofit for sale thru dealers 1980 Eagle wagons with diesel engines. The engine chose by SAE and AMC was the Italian built Stabilimenti Meccanichi VM . The specific engine model was the HR 692 HT; a four-stroke, in-line, 6 cylinder, turbo charged diesel engine with a 219 cubic inch displacement. This engine produced 150 HP at 4200 rpm and 219 foot pounds of torque at 2400 RPM. This was 35 more HP than the Eagle’s standard 258 CID gasoline engine . Torque values were similar with the diesel pulling 14 foot pounds more, but at a higher RPM than the gasoline version. |

I always focus on the torque number. How long and how much. There was even an old adage to support . Horsepower sells cars. Torque wins races |

I believe I know the person you sold it to, he had it for a few years before realizing he was not going to be able to undertake the restoration, so it went to the Rambler Ranch where it will be undergoing a restoration, hopefully soon. If I recall, Terry said the big issue is getting parts to restore the engine.

It's an Italian engine, made by VM Motori, and it has a ruined turbocharger.
A new turbo could be located and imported without terrible trouble if a person had contacts in Europe, which I am sure Terry does. |

The Hemmings show, Barn Find Hunter, went to the Rambler Ranch and spotlighted the diesel Eagle. The episode is on YouTube.
